This checklist is the condensed, tick-box version of the family's to-do list - print it out and put it in the document folder. The guiding principle stays the same: the primary route for filing a claim is always the insurer's own customer service and online portal; this list simply makes that route go smoothly.
In short:- Print it out and keep it with the policy - it works even when no one has time for a long read.
- The keys: a case number on everything, a copy of everything, submitting it all together, dates written down.
- If things get stuck, the broker steps in - fill in the contact details at the bottom of the list.
A) Preparation (in calm times, starting today)
- ☐ The policy (or policies) and the insurer's contact details in one place: the document map filled in.
- ☐ The family knows where it is, and who to call first.
- ☐ The broker's contact details written down (below, at the bottom of the list).
B) Filing
- ☐ Policy number tracked down (if you don't have it: the insurer can find it from your name and personal details).
- ☐ Filed by phone with the insurer or through its online portal: how it works.
- ☐ Case number requested and written down - from now on, put it on every submission.
- ☐ The list of required documents requested in writing: typical lists.
C) Documentation
- ☐ Documents collected according to the list - all together where possible.
- ☐ A copy made of everything (a photo is fine too).
- ☐ Submitted - the method and date of submission noted down.
- ☐ Receipt confirmed (reference number, email).
D) Follow-up
- ☐ Checking in on the case status at a reasonable pace - with the case number: what to expect.
- ☐ Received a request for missing items? Its content understood, met by the deadline, with a copy kept.
- ☐ One line of notes for every phone call: date, case handler, the gist of it.
E) If things get stuck
- ☐ Requests for missing items going in circles, unexplained silence, or a disputed decision? → the broker steps in: when and how.
- ☐ The steps of the formal complaints route are known (complaint to the insurer → the MNB / the Financial Arbitration Board).
