Loading, exclusion, or decline? What you can do when underwriting isn't standard

The underwriting result is in, and it isn't what you expected: a loading, an exclusion, perhaps a decline. The first reaction is often to feel hurt, or to give up - yet this is exactly the point where a broker and market competition are worth the most. A non-standard underwriting outcome isn't a verdict: it's information you can work with.

In short:
  • A loading is a risk-based price - accepting it is often worthwhile, because your protection stays complete.
  • Underwriting practice differs between insurers: the same situation can produce a different outcome at another insurer.
  • Even with a decline, there's a way forward: trying again after a postponement, a different structure, a different direction for cover.

The loading: accept it, or put it out to the market?

First, understand what justifies it - you have the right to, so ask without hesitation. Then there are two paths: accept it (cover is in force immediately, according to the terms), or ask the market - as your broker, I start underwriting with several insurers at once, and the table shows you where the terms are best. Importantly: a loading isn't permanent - if your condition improves, or after quitting smoking, you can ask for a review.

The exclusion: a compromise, weighed carefully

An offer with an exclusion protects everything except the excluded risk - often better than nothing, but only if the excluded area is genuinely a side issue in your life. If it would exclude exactly the thing that matters most, let's keep looking: another insurer, a different structure, or covering that risk through another means - for example accident insurance.

The decline: what it means, and what it doesn't

A decline is a decision by a particular insurer about a particular product - it isn't the market's final word. The order of steps: understand the reason; if a recent health event lies behind it, try again after a postponement - once your condition has stabilized, with recent test results: with an existing condition; meanwhile, look at other insurers' simplified-underwriting or differently structured policies. Your family's protection can be built on more than one leg.

The broker's role in these situations

This is exactly the terrain where independent brokering adds tangible value: I know insurers' underwriting practices, I pursue several directions at once, and you see the outcomes in a single table. I assess your needs and inform you about the options - the decision is yours: let's start with a conversation.
