Health data in life insurance: who sees it, for how long, and on what basis?

The health declaration contains your most personal data - it's a fair question where it goes and who sees it. Health details are not the broker's working tools: the substantive assessment takes place within the insurer's medical process. What reaches me is only what's essential for handling the case – and that too is subject to insurance secrecy and data-protection obligations.

In short:
  • The recipient of health data is the insurer: underwriting is carried out by the insurer's medical experts, under confidentiality.
  • Data handling takes place on a legal basis and with your consent - the details are in the insurer's privacy notice.
  • The broker organizes the process: the content of the completed declaration goes to the insurer, not into the broker's files.

The path your data takes during the application

The declaration and any exam results go into the insurer's underwriting process: there, medical experts assess them, under insurance-secrecy and health-data-protection rules. The insurer provides a detailed privacy notice about data handling - it's worth actually reading it when you sign, and keeping it.

What does the broker see of this?

The key point: health details are not the broker's working tools. My role is to organize the process - getting questionnaires to you, tracking deadlines, comparing the outcomes (standard, loading, exclusion) in the table. The content of diagnoses is handled by the insurer's medical side; what reaches me is only what's essential for handling the case. elet.biz's own data handling is set out in the Privacy notice.

A practical note

Being careful about privacy is a good instinct - but being sparing with the declaration isn't data protection, it's a disclosure risk. The right balance: a complete and accurate answer to the questions asked, sent through the protected, regulated channel - combined with healthy curiosity about privacy notices.
