More and more Hungarian families now have a foreign chapter in their lives – a longer posting, several years of working abroad, or commuting across a border. The good news: Hungarian life insurance policies typically don't stop at the border. The precise picture, though, depends on the policy terms – and it's worth clarifying a few questions before you leave.
Term life cover typically isn't limited to Hungary – if the insured event happens abroad, it's still assessed under the policy terms. The details can differ from product to product: some terms may include restrictions for certain regions or activities (for example a war zone or a hazardous occupation): exclusions. Asking the question before you leave is worth more than a dispute afterwards.
Long-term work abroad – especially if the occupation or the destination country carries a different risk rating – may fall under the policy's rules on reporting changes. The principle here is the same as the logic of the duty of disclosure: whatever was a question at the time you took out cover (occupation, place of residence) can also matter later on if it changes materially. If you ask, I set this in motion with the insurer – the insurer then decides: accept it, apply a loading, or narrow the cover.
If your foreign chapter is still ahead of you, it's worth arranging cover from home before you leave – the process is simpler, and the cover will travel with you through the years abroad. For those already living abroad, taking out a Hungarian policy depends on individual insurers' practice (place of residence, reachability) – we work through this case by case. And for those returning home, the tasks are the same as with any major change: cover-amount review.
